Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also called endodontic treatment, is necessary when the nerve supply of a tooth is affected by tooth decay, gum disease, or trauma.

The nerve is located in the core of the tooth, extending into canals in the roots. If the nerve becomes exposed and infected, it can cause pain and discomfort, making it difficult to eat, drink, and sleep.

During a root canal treatment, delicate instruments are used to clean out the root canals, remove any infected nerve tissue, and ensure that the canal is thoroughly clean. A rubber-like filling material is then placed in the canal system to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth and to restore normal function. The success rate of root canal treatment is generally high.

If root canal treatment is not performed, the only other options are to extract the tooth and leave a gap or to replace it with an implant, bridge, or removable denture. While these alternatives can be effective, they cannot fully replicate the function and feel of a natural tooth.
